Carmen Carrera is the 28-year-old star of the transgender community. She is making headlines for a new campaign to make her the first trans Victoria’s Secret model in light of the lingerie brand’s impending yearly fashion show.

Here is what you need to know about Carmen Carrera:

1. She is the Subject of a Petition to Victoria’s Secret


Earlier this week hosted a petition directed at Victoria’s Secret to make Carmen Carrera a new model. The description of the petition reads:

This petition is for Victoria’s Secret to seriously consider taking Carmen Carrera on as an angel. By making Carmen the very first trans supermodel, you will help to end femmephobia within the LGBTIQQA community, but also it will show the entire trans community that you embrace them as your patrons.
If you watched Carmen at the Marco Marco runway show at LA Fashion week this year, then you know she has what it takes to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel.

As of Thursday afternoon the post had over 27,000 signatures.

2. She Came Out as Trans in 2012

Formerly known as a gay man, in 2012 Carrera identified herself as a heterosexual trans woman. Above you can see a 2013 Inside Edition interview with Carrera where she discusses her transition and how dressing in drag allowed her to be herself.

3. She Got Her Start on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’



Carrera entered the spotlight in 2011 when she joined the reality competition show RuPaul’s Drag Race on the LOGO Network. She was eliminated in the 10th episode but was invited back and re-eliminated in the 12th episode.

4. She’s an Outspoken Advocate for Trans Rights

Carrera has an incredibly active Youtube channel and Twitter account where she often tweets about the everyday difficulties faced by trans individuals.
