Here’s what you need to know:
1. Bayne’s Health Problems Date Back to 2011
After his phenomenal success at the 2011 Daytona 500 where he became the competition’s youngest ever winner, Bayne was sidelined for illness. He was admitted to the Mayo Clinic. It was reported that his sickness was due to an insect bite, that may have caused Lyme disease. He had been complaining of a numbness in his arm prior to the Daytona 500, a condition that Bayne felt was related to the insect bite.
2. His Career Has Been Affected by His Health Problems
He was the new young, fresh face of NASCAR after his victory in Daytona. But his career stalled after the victory due to his illness. Bayne was racing for the legendary Wood Brothers Racing team.
3. Bayne Just Raced on November 3
He last raced on November 3 in the Sprint Cup Series at the AAA Texas 500 in a race won by Jimmie Johnson. Bayne finished in 29th place.
4. MS Runs in Bayne’s Family
Bayne’s sister, Sarah, has also been diagnosed with MS. In 2011, Knox News reported that she was dealing with her condition extremely well and was a cheerleader at Webb High School in Tennessee. Bayne’s mother, Stephanie, said of Sarah:
[Sarah] likes to enjoy his excitement but at the same time she’s having so many struggles…that’s a whole balancing act for all of us.
5. Bayne Was Married This Year
He was just married on June 4, 2013, to Ashton Clapp.
