Michael Schumacher, the amazing Formula 1 driver, is in critical condition after a severe skiing accident. Read on for the details on Schumacher’s condition and the accident.


1. Schumacher Has Suffered Severe Head Trauma

Schumacher is in critical condition after a skiing accident in the French Alps today. While skiing, Schumacher fell and hit his head on a rock at the Meribel Resort, resulting in severe head trauma. CNN reports:

Resort director Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte said the incident happened while Schumacher was skiing off-piste (on unmarked slopes) Sunday morning in the mountains of Meribel resort between Georges Bauduis Piste and La Biche Piste. Gernignon-Lecomte told CNN the racing star was wearing a helmet when he hit his head.

Apparently, Schumacher was skiing with his 14-year-old son Mick at the time of the accident, according to the Daily Mail.


2. The Motorsport Legend Was Airlifted to the Hospital

After the accident Schumacher was reached by first-responders within minutes. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital and then had been transferred from the Hospital of Moutiers to the Grenoble Hospital, where there’s a trauma center. Schumacher was said to have been conscious at the scene of the accident and the injury was originally considered to not be life-threatening. However, witnesses who reported the accident, stated they saw blood coming from Schumacher’s helmet and on the snow around him. A spokeswoman told the Daily Mail:

He fell and hit his head at 11:07am. A helicopter was at the site at 11:15am.


3. Schumacher Arrived at the Hospital in a Coma

When Schumacher first received help, his condition did not seem grave. However, by the time Schumacher reached the hospital, he had slipped into a coma. He then was taken into brain surgery almost immediately. Schumacher’s wife Corinna, 16-year-old daughter Gina-Marie, and Schumacher’s son Mick were all at the hospital and currently remain there.

Schumacher’s 45th birthday is this coming Friday.


4. The Cause of the Accident Is Unclear

The resort director has stated that there is an investigation currently going on to see what caused Schumacher’s fall. He stated to CNN that:

We have to wait for a police report. There is an open investigation going on. We insist on the fact that Michael Schumacher was skiing off-piste and his fall is not linked to an avalanche.


5. Reps Have Confirmed the Incident

Spokeswoman Sabine Kehm has posted a statement on the Formula 1 site in regards to Schumacher’s condition saying:

He was taken to hospital and is receiving professional medical care. We ask for understanding that we cannot give continuous information about his health. He was wearing a helmet and was not alone. For his fall, no other person was involved.
