Kentucky Derby Horses 2014: The Photos You Need to See

Samraat

Samraat looks like a pretty good contender, but we'll have to wait and see. America's Best Racing gives a favorable background on the horse: Samraat won his first five career races, including Kentucky Derby prep races the Withers and Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York. Samraat is an Ancient Indian word which translates into “Emperor.” Rick Violette Jr. is the trainer and Jose Ortiz will be the jockey. Here's the background on Ortiz, compliments of the Kentucky Derby: Jose Ortiz is a Puerto Rican jockey who currently rides on the New York circuit with his older brother Irad Ortiz Jr. The pair made headlines on January 20, 2013 when they won the first seven races on Aqueduct's card with Jose earning three of the wins. The Ortiz brothers were encourage to become jockeys by their grandfather, who worked on the backside of racetracks in New York helping newly arrived hispanic jockeys get started in the United States.
