Fukushima Earthquake 2014: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

An earthquake has struck in Japan’s north eastern waters, just off of Fukushima. The quake hit at around 3:22 p.m. Eastern time, reports The Weather Channel.

Here’s what we know so far:

1. The Tsunami May Hit the City of Namie

The earthquake’s magnitude has been measured at 6.8. The city of Namie is closest to the earthquake’s epicenter, reports Russia Today.

2. A Small Tsuanmi Is Expected

A tsunami of around 3 feet is expected to hit, an advisory has been issued for the coastal areas around Fukushima.

3. It’s Been 3 Years Since the Last Major Tsunami in the Region

In 2011, a tsunami devastated the region, killing over 15,000 people.

4. This Comes Just After Typhoon Neoguri

Yesterday, a tropical storm was reported in the area around Fukushima as an after affected of Typhoon Neoguri.

5. The Tsunami Will Not Hit the U.S.

The tsunami is not expected to reach North American coastlines, Hawaii is also exempted from the warning, according to The Weather Channel.
