Two NYPD officers have been hospitalized after they were attacked by an axe-wielding maniac on October 23 just after 2 p.m., reports ABC New York. In total four cops were injured but only two were rushed to area-hospitals.

Here’s what we know so far:


1. Cops Killed the Axe Wielder

The suspect was shot dead by responding cops. The New York Daily News reports that the suspect was “wounded by at least one bullet.” The aftermath of the attack was caught on video (above).

DNA Info reports that a freelance photographer had asked the two officers to pose for a photo. As the picture was about to be a taken, a maniac lunged at the cops with an 18-inch hatchet.


2. It’s a ‘Completely Unprovoked’ Attack

The Daily News reports that the man confronted a group of officers when the attack happened. He then lunged at the cops. NYPD Inspector Kim Royster described it as a “completely unprovoked attack.” An eyewitness, Larry Bethune, told the New York Post:

The cops yelled ‘Drop it!’ And he lunged at them. He raised his arm up high and brought it straight down on the cop’s head. The cop went down to the ground, face first. It was horrible. I’ve never seen anything like that on Jamaica Avenue. The cop’s just lying there with blood pouring down his face. He didn’t move.


3. The Officers Are in Stable Condition

The two officers are both in stable condition in hospital. According to Newsday, one of the injured cops was hit in the head.

One cop is being treated at the Jamaica Medical Center, the other was rushed to North Shore University, reports The Daily News. The woman who was attacked was also transported to hospital, her condition is unknown. According to CBS New York, a homeless woman was accidentally hit by an NYPD bullet. She is in critical condition.

Mayor Bill de Blasio was impressed with the officers:

I was very impressed by not only the bavery in the face of something absolutely unexpected, but the way the two officers responded to the incident and were able to stop the situation and deal with the perpetrator.


4. The Cops Were All Rookies

According to DNA Info, the police involved in the incident were all fresh-faced rookies.
