Nathan Cirillo, a 24-year-old soldier from Hamilton, Ontario, was standing guard at the War Memorial in Ottawa Wednesday when he was shot by a gunman.
Cirillo later died at a nearby hospital. He was mourned throughout the world as world leaders and ordinary citizens alike expressed their sympathy for his family and the Canadian people.
The gunman, identified by multiple news outlets as 32-year-old Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, is reported to have traveled on foot to the nearby Parliament building, where he opened fire before being shot to death by heroic sergeant at arms Kevin Vickers.
