Mexican singer Alfredito Olivas is in critical condition in hospital after being shot multiple times on stage. The attack happened in Parral at around 1:30 a.m. on February 27.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. The Video of the Shooting Went Viral
The incident was captured on a cellphone video and has been widely distributed on social media. It shows the panic at the scene as Olivas, who was coming to the end of his song “That’s It,” falls to the floor as the concert attendees duck and scramble for safety. You can watch the shocking video above.
2. He Was Hit 3 Times During the Attack
Tiempo in Mexico reports that Olivas was struck three times during the shooting. The network also reports that Olivas had been due to perform tonight in Gomez Palacio, Durango. The attack happened in a night club called the Hacienda in the city of Parral in the state of Chihuahua, around 300 miles south of the Texas border.
3. An Alcoholic Fueled Jealous Rage Has Been Mentioned as a Possible Motive
El Diario reports that the shooting was the result of a jealous rage from a gunman who had “consumed alcohlic beverages.” Police have suspects in custody and have recovered a gun used in the attack.
4. In June 2014, Olivas Was Threatened With Death
In June 2014, Olivas was threatened as part of an ongoing feud in Obregon Sonora, reports Borderland Beat. The above threat reads:
Well we are here and we are not leaving,
and watch out Chapito Trinis because we’ve come
with everything. pure federal force salazar 17 ATM
and the same you did to Tito is going to happen to
Alfredito Olivas, fucking Chapo Trini Olivas
AN EYE FOR AN EYE
The threat makes reference to the killing of U.S. born Mexican singer Tomas Tovar Rascon in June 2014. He was murdered in the border state of Sonora in Mexico. That shooting, and the threat toward Olivas, was part of an ongoing feud between the Trini family and the Salazar cartel.
5. Mexican Music Is Still in a State of Mourning
This shooting comes just days after the Mexican music industry was rocked by the death of popular singer Ariel Camacho. He was killed after a car accident in Sinaloa on February 25. He was 22 years old.
This was the second time in 12 months that Camacho was involved in a car accident. In both crashes, speeding has been cited as the cause. He regularly posted videos of himself driving on his Facebook page.
