Kim Howe was the only person to die during a four car pile-up involving former Olympian Bruce Jenner. The crash happened in Malibu along the Pacific Coast Highway on February 7 at around 12:12 p.m.

Here’s what you need to know:


1. She Was a Neighbor of the Kardashians

The Los Angeles Times reports that Howe, 69, was neighbor of the Kardashian/Jenner family in Calabasas, California. Specifically, Howe lived in the same gated community as Khloe Kardashian, The Oaks, reports CBS Los Angeles.


2. She Didn’t Have a Valid License

She was killed while driving her Lexus when she collided with a Toyota Prius, she was then rear-ended by Jenner’s Cadillac Escalade. That impact pushed her car into oncoming traffic. Howe died at the scene. After being knocked into traffic, Howe is believed to have been hit by a Hummer. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is pleading for witnesses to come forward. 3. Bruce Jenner Could Face Vehicular Manslaughter Charges

Jenner is denying that he was texting during the accident. His phone records will be shown to police, according to his publicist Alan Nierob, who was speaking to the Associated Press. Former Olympian Jenner passed a breathalyzer just after the crash. TMZ reported on February 9 that Jenner had “lawyered up” and had hired renowned criminal lawyer Blair Berk. The gossip site says that investigators don’t think that Jenner was texting and driving but rather that he was following to closely behind Howe. That’s a traffic violation, which, if it results in the death of a person, could count as vehicular manslaughter. Though TMZ notes that it’s unusual for someone to face such charges for following too close.

Howe and her late-husband, Robert, bought their home in Calabasas from former New York Met Bret Saberhagen in 2003. The New York Daily News reports that two days after the deal went through, Robert Howe died of a heart attack. KTLA reports that the couple had no children and that Howe also had a home in Malibu. Speaking to the Acorn in Calabasas, Jim Pascucci, who knew Howe said, “Two days after the close of escrow, Mr. Howe passed away unexpectedly. So [Howe] has lived in the house as a widow since then. She was very charitable, giving, and put a lot of time into the community. Her life was cut short. It was a very tragic and sad situation.”


5. The Crash Comes as Jenner Is Under Increased Media Scrutiny

The crash also came as a Bruce Jenner is coming under increased media speculation about his apparent transition into a female. After the crash, initial speculation suggested that Jenner was trying to outrun pursuing paparazzi.
