Baltimore’s state’s attorney has pressed charges against the officers who arrested Freddie Gray. Now the police are calling her marriage to a local politician into question. Marilyn Mosby and her husband, Baltimore City Councillor, Nick Mosby, have been married since October 2005. The couple have two daughters together.

On April 12, Freddie Gray was fatally injured while he was being transported by Baltimore police. He died a week later at a local hospital. On May 1, Marilyn Mosby announced that charges had been filed against the officers who arrested Gray. His death and funeral prompted nights of rioting and unrest in the city.

1. Marilyn Mosby Is in the Fourth Month of Her First Term

Marilyn Mosby has only been Baltimore’s state’s attorney since January. The Washington Post reports that she ousted a white incumbent, Gregg Bernstein, in the democratic primary and won the general election easily. The city of Baltimore is 65 percent black. In a Washington Post profile, it says that Marilyn previously clerked at U.S. attorney’s offices in Boston and D.C. On her Facebook page, she says she’s a native of Boston.

2. She Says Freddie Gray Was ‘Illegally Arrested’

When announcing the charges, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby said that Freddie Gray was “illegally arrested” and that there was no probable cause. When Mosby announced the charges, cheers and chants of “justice” erupted from the watching crowd. During her remarks, Mosby said that the knife that was found on Gray wasn’t an illegal switchblade. In a brief remark upon hearing about the charges, President Obama said it’s “absolutely vital that the truth comes out…justice needs to be served.” Maryland’s medical examiner officially ruled Gray’s death a homicide.

3. Marilyn Mosby’s Parents Were Both Cops

Mariyln Mosby’s parents were both police officers, reports the Washington Post. In an open letter to her from the Fraternal Order of Police, Mosby’s marital status and her connection to Gray’s family’s lawyer, William Murphy, was called into question. The Post reports that Murphy made a $5,000 donation to Marilyn Mosby’s state’s attorney campaign. The letter also makes reference to Nick Mosby saying “it is clear your husband’s political future will be directly impacted, for better or worse by the outcome of your investigation.”

4. They’re College Sweethearts

Nick and Marilyn Mosby met while the were both students at Tuskegee University in Alabama. According to his Facebook page, Nick Mosby was an engineering student at the school while his wife studied law. He was first elected to the Baltimore City Council in November 2011. In 2012, the Baltimore City Paper voted him the city’s best politician, according to his LinkedIn page.

On his profile page at the Balitmore City Council website, it says that Mosby is councilman for the city’s seventh district. He serves on the Labor, Education, Public Safety and Housing and Community Development committees. During the rioting that ensued following the death of Freddie Gray, Nick Mosby was interviewed on Fox News and CNN as he walked through the streets trying to spread calm.
