A new video purportedly released by the Islamic State shows an an alleged spy being crucified, like Jesus on the Cross. A jihadist carries out the crucifying. The video is called “Deterrence of the Spies 1,” alluding to the fact that there may be a follow-up to the crucified man’s situation, possibly another spy getting crucified or worse.
The video begins with an interview with a masked jihadist, who explains the charges against the alleged spy. The camera then cuts to the “spy,” who looks disheveled and sleep deprived. He is then escorted from his prison cell and strung up on a cross. A sword-bearing jihadist then walks up with a sword and nearly severs his right hand at the wrist.
Rumor of ISIS carrying out the ancient punishment of crucifixion have circled the internet since their rise, but as of yet there had been no video or photographic evidence of the practice. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, crucifixion was first described in ancient Persia when “Darius I, king of Persia, crucified 3,000 political opponents in Babylon.”
