Chuck Netzhammer went to Walmart to get an edible image cake printed with the Confederate flag. Walmart denied his request, citing company policy, but accepted the Islamic State flag. Netzhammer then shared a video of his ordeal on YouTube, writing:
On 06/25/15 I attempted to get an Edible image cake printed with the confederate flag image on it at Walmart. It was denied. The next day I had them do the same for the ISIS battle flag image I brought to them. They cheerfully did it. and sold me my ISIS cake. WTF Walmart! ISIS is beheading Christians, selling little girls into slavery, and is currently a terrorist org at war with the United States……..but you can’t buy the General Lee toy car at Wallmart? It’s a damn shame.
Controversy surrounding the Confederate flag has crescendoed in the past week. Discussion about the meaning of the flag and its place in modern American culture comes at a time of increasing racial tensions following the mass shooting murders of a black church congregation in Charleston, South Carolina by white supremacist Dylann Storm Roof. Yesterday, African-American activist Bree Newsome scaled the flag pole flying the Confederate flag at the South Carolina capitol grounds and took it down. She was arrested afterwards and charged with a misdemeanor.
The Islamic State flag, known as the “Black Banner”, has also been in the news recently following an onslaught of seemingly coordinated terrorist attacks in France, Tunisia, and Kuwait on Thursday. But it appears Walmart’s printing of the cake was a mere fluke. The Daily Caller, who also reported on the Netzhammer’s video, writes:
The Daily caller was contacted by Randy Hargrove, a spokesman for Wal-Mart, who said in an email, “Our local store made a mistake. The cake in the video should not have been made and we apologize.”
Hargrove later explained to TheDC, “We made the decision to stop selling Confederate flag related items promoting the flag’s image. For that reason we did not make the cake. [Netzhammer] brought in the other image of ISIS and really, what happened, was our associate didn’t recognize what that image was and what it meant or it wouldn’t have been made.”
A similar mistake of the Islamic State flag identification took place by CNN yesterday. They reported that a Black Banner was spotted at a Pride parade in London, when in reality it was a mocking of the ISIS flag with the use of dildos to imitate the Arabic text.
