The account isn’t his.
Hunter Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, has officially condemned reports that he had a registered account on Ashley Madison, the recently hacked website that allowed individuals to sign up for anonymous affairs.
This isn’t the first time that Biden, a married father of three, has been in the headlines. He has previously drawn the spotlight for business moves and an under-the-radar discharge from the U.S. Navy. Here’s what you need to know about Biden’s alleged account and what he had to say about the hack:
1. Biden Denied Reports That an Ashley Madison Account in His Name Was His
It didn’t take long for Hunter Biden to officially deny reports that he had an Ashley Madison account.
A day after news broke that the Vice President’s son was found on a list of users on the notorious site, Biden broke his silence on the matter, releasing a statement:
I am certain that the account in question is not mine. This account was clearly set up by someone else without my knowledge, and I first learned about the account in question from the media. This is, unfortunately, not the first time that someone has used my name and identity to try to discredit me. From my understanding through press accounts, it is very easy to set up an account without someone’s knowledge as there is no requirement that an email address be verified, and I am certain that is what happened in this case.
A source told People Magazine that the IP address from which the Ashley Madison account was established is located in Jacksonville, Florida. The account also has Biden’s date of birth and other information wrong.
2. Breitbart News First Reported the Account Tied to Biden’s E-mail Address
The political news website was the first to report, on August 24, that an account had been set up in Biden’s name. The site reported that Biden believed “his enemies” had access to personal information, possibly by hacking into other online accounts, and that they fabricated the Ashley Madison account in his name.
Biden also told Breitbart that he no longer uses the e-mail tied to the Ashley Madison account but the “Robert Biden” Ashley Madison account was validated with a credit card payment in June 2014 for $280.
3. Biden & His Wife, Kathleen, Met in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps
After graduating from Georgetown University and Yale Law School, Biden was a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest. It was through that work that Biden met his future wife, Kathleen Buhle.
Kathleen Biden grew up in Chicago and graduated from Saint Ignatius in 1987. Her family still lives in the city and two months out of the year the Biden family vacations at their Lake Michigan summer home.
4. The Pair Have Three Daughters Together
Hunter and Kathleen Biden are parents to three daughters together; Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy. All three children are also regulars in Washington and spend time with their grandfather, Vice President Joe Biden.
Naomi, the oldest, is named after Hunter’s sister, who passed away in the same 1972 car crash that killed his mother Neila. Finnegan, the middle daughter, has been credited with pushing her grandfather to accept the nomination for Vice President. Biden told reporters that she “pushed the hardest” for him to accept when Obama offered. Finally, Missy joined Biden in Brazil at the 2014 World Cup Final.
5. Biden Was Discharged From the Navy Reserve in 2014
Although the discharge occurred in February, it was not reported until October 2014 when the Wall Street Journal published a story citing a Navy official who spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity. According to the report, Biden was discharged from the Navy reserve, after less than a year in the service, following a positive cocaine test.
Biden had previously received a waiver to join the program, both for his age and for a past drug-related incident.
In a statement released by his attorney, Biden acknowledged the discharge, saying:
It was the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge. I respect the Navy’s decision. With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.
On April 18, 2014, it was announced that Biden joined the board of directors of Burisma Holdings, a firm which holds several Ukranian oil and gasp companies. He became acting director on May 12, 2014.
