Authorities say Chris Harper Mercer killed nine people and wounded at least seven others at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The gunfire broke out at the school at around 10:40 a.m. local time on October 1. Speaking to the Roseburg News Review, a witness said that Mercer asked students their religions before shooting them.
Oregon's Attorney General says that the 26-year-old Harper Mercer was also killed. According to authorities, responding officers exchanged fire with Harper Mercer when they arrived at the scene in Roseburg, about 175 miles south of Portland. There are approximately 5,000 students at the school, most of whom are part-time.
The gunfire broke out inside the classroom of Professor Larry Levine. He's an English adjunct educator at the school and a native of New York City.
