A Winston Salem-State University student was killed and another was wounded in a shooting on the school’s North Carolina campus early Sunday morning, police say.

Police are searching for a person of interest, 21-year-old Jarrett Jerome Moore, of Charlotte, according to WFMY-TV.

The victim killed in the shooting has been identified as Anthony White Jr. The other victim has not been named.

The shooting happened at about 1:30 a.m. in a parking lot located between two residence halls, WTVD-TV reports.

1. The Student Killed Was a Sophomore From Charlotte

Anthony White Jr., the student killed in the shooting, was a 19-year-old sophomore at Winston-Salem State University, WTVD-TV reports. He was originally from Charlotte.

An officer at the school told reporter Trish Williford that White tried to stay on the straight and narrow. The officer said he had many conversations with White about life.

White’s last tweets were on October 30:

According to his Twitter account, he was an information technology major at the school.


2. The School Was Locked Down for Several Hours After the Shooting

The university’s campus was locked down for several hours after the shooting. The lockdown was lifted at about 5 a.m.

Winston-Salem State University is a historically black college. The school is celebrating its homecoming this weekend. Visitors to the campus are asked to be cautious and stay away from restricted areas, the university said in a Facebook post.

“A call center for inquiries regarding this morning’s shooting incident has been established: 336-750-2000,” the university’s statement said. “Counseling services for students is set up in Thompson Center Room 304. If you have questions about counseling, call 336-750-2000.”


3. Moore Is Not Believed to be a Student at Winston-Salem State

According to WFMY-TV, police do not believe Moore is a student at Winston-Salem State University. It’s not yet known if he had any connection to the school or if he knew White or the victim wounded in the shooting.

Police are calling Moore a person of interest in the shooting, and have not yet said if they believe he was the gunman.


4. He Was Charged With Disorderly Conduct in August in Charlotte

Moore was arrested in August 2015 in Charlotte and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting an officer, according to court records. He was released on $500 bond.

It’s not yet known if Moore has any other criminal record.


5. An On-Campus Vigil is Scheduled for Sunday Night

According to messages posted on Twitter, the university community is gathering for a prayer vigil, “Uplifting All Rams,” on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the clock tower on campus.

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines said in a statement:

The city joins the Winston-Salem State community in grieving the death of one student and the injury of another. This terrible incident has marred what should have been a weekend of celebration for the new chancellor and for returning alumni enjoying their homecoming weekend. I urge all the citizens of Winston-Salem to keep these students, their families, and the Winston-Salem State community in their thoughts and prayers.
