Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke was charged Tuesday in the shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. The teen was shot 16 times by Van Dyke from 12 to 15 feet away in October 2014. The charges are set to be filed after a judge ruled that a video showing the shooting must be released to the public by Wednesday. McDonald was armed with a knife and wanted in a robbery when he was shot. Van Dyke's lawyer has said his client feared for his life when he shot McDonald. Four other officers at the scene did not fire their weapons. Van Dyke has been on paid desk duty for several months while facing a federal and state investigation. McDonald’s family settled a lawsuit with the city for $5 million in April. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called Van Dyke's actions "hideous." The city had been fighting the release of the video before a judge ruled last week that they must release it. Officials decided not to appeal the decision.
