A sexual assault survivor and activist from New York live blogged the aftermath of her rape in South Africa to encourage other victims to stand up and tell their stories. In December, 27-year-old Amber Amour says she was attacked in Cape Town while she was in the city to promote her “Stop Rape. Educate” campaign. Almost immediately after the incident, she took to Instagram to share her horrific experience. Amour blamed her rape on a man she knew named Shakir.

Here’s what you need to know about this incredible story:

1. Amour Said She ‘Had to Practice What [She] Preached’ & Tell the World About Her Rape

In a blog Amour wrote for Marie Claire about her ordeal, she said:

Here I was, telling survivors every single day that they should speak up… I knew I had to practice what I preached. So the first thing I did was take a picture and write a post, describing what had happened. It was almost an intuitive thing. I was still in the bathroom – in the crime scene. I don’t even think I’d stood up. I just typed and typed.

Amour writes that she agreed to go for a shower with Shakir in his hotel room in Cape Town because her hostel didn’t have hot water. As well as that, she was suffering from food poisoning. This is her Instagram post in full:

It was only a few minutes ago but sometimes these things happen so fast it’s hard to remember all the details…. I’ve been sick for the past 2 days and today was my first day out. I went back to my old hostel to leave a note for a friend, Nick. There was another guy there, Shakir, who was desperately trying to get with me. I kissed him once but he seemed drunk so I told him it was bad timing, I had already met someone.

Before heading out, I went upstairs to say hi to one more friend, Clyde from the states. Shakir followed me upstairs and said he was going to take a shower. He invited me to join. I said yes because the water at my current hostel is pretty cold and after 2 days of being sick, I just really wanted a hot shower.

As soon as I got in the bathroom, he forced me to my knees. I said “stop!” but he just got more violent. He lifted me up and put his penis in my vagina. I asked him to stop, again, as I began to cry. When he shoved it in my ass, that’s when I passed out. I woke up a few minutes later and saw him trying to creep out the door. When he saw that I was awake, he came back to finish me off in the shower.

I have all those fucked up feelings that we get after rape…shame, disgust, suffering. I’m here, alone, and any DNA has been wiped away in the shower. The South African police will just roll their eyes when I walk in. Feeling sicker than ever now. Needless today, I’m going to disappear for a bit.

Just need to enjoy the freaking sun and call my friends and family in the states. Love you guys. Thank you for always being there for me. All the more reason to continue @stoprapeeducate but not today. Today, I need rest. #StopRapeEducate

Amour followed up that post with a photograph of her rape kit being administered as well as local police investigating the scene.

2. Shakir Has Been Released From Jail in South Africa on a $75 Bail

According to a January 2 Facebook post, Amour said that her attacker was released on a bail of $75 with his next court appearance scheduled for March 29. She wrote in the same update, “In the meantime, I’ll continue my humanitarian work here in Africa.” In a separate post, Amour wrote of her desire to get out of Cape Town because she had the feeling that she could walk by her attacker at any time.

On December 31, she wrote on Facebook that when Shakir was questioned by police he “never mentioned attacking me (obviously) but said that we had consensual sex but then he stopped it because he thought about his 8-month child and girlfriend.”

3. She Was Also Raped in New York in September 2014

On her official website, Amour says that she was sexually assaulted by her room mate in September 2014 while she lived in New York City. Her bio adds:

Having also experienced sexual abuse and multiple rapes in her life, she immediately decided to raise awareness about sexual assault through chalk art in the streets of New York City. This was the birth of #StopRapeEducate.

In her Marie Claire blog, Amour wrote that she didn’t like how the NYPD handled her case saying:

I’ll never forget calling 911 and reporting my assault – only for eight male officers to turn up at my door. I was like, ‘OK, I said the rapist wasn’t here, so I don’t need eight of you, and at least send one woman, please?’ I don’t think they realised how traumatic it is for a survivor.

Amour went on to say that the case against her attacker in 2014 was later dismissed.

4. Unfortunately, Amour Has Been Targeted by Trolls on Social Media

To highlight their insensitivity, Amour has been reposting what Internet trolls have said to her about the attack:

5. Amour Is a Vegansexual

On Instagram, Amour says that she is a Vegansexual, meaning that she only has sex with other vegans.

A New York Times report about the trend of vegansexuality quoted a 49-year-old woman from New Zealand saying, “I couldn’t think of kissing lips that allow dead animal pieces to pass between them.” While another said, “Nonvegetarian bodies smell different to me.”

It’s staged bs, she’s an attention whore.
For someone having been raped she continues making poor choices at best but I suspect she’s manipulating situations for the attention.

Why can’t lesbians be vegan?
Vegans can’t eat anything with a face.
