Shefit, a company that makes adjustable sports bras, entered the Shark Tank in Season 7. We interviewed owner Sara Moylan, who appeared on the show with her husband, Robert.
When asked what sets her product apart from the rest, she said, “Our patented adjustability is the number one differentiator. We’ve incorporated over 10 inches of adjustability in both the bust band and the shoulder straps which allows women to create a truly customizable fit. Our bra becomes Her Bra, Her Way. Finally a custom fit that she desires.”
Here’s what else she told us about…
How She Got The Idea
The idea was sparked over 10 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. My breasts were enlarged and it was becoming increasingly difficult and uncomfortable to workout. I created the first prototype simply to solve that personal problem. A decade and thousands of bras sold later, the product has, obviously, struck a chord with other women as well.
The Kickstarter Experience
We had a great experience with Kickstarter. We learned a lot about what people wanted, and what people didn’t want, and we learned about focusing on our core product before delving into a full line of apparel. Most of all, though, we learned that the need for the product was real, that women really did want the product and need the product. That experience really propelled us to where we are today.
How Their ‘Shark Tank’ Appearance Came About
We have been fans of the show for years, since season one, really; and we had a friend who had gone through quite a lot of the process with the Shark Tank production team. Although he never filmed or aired an episode, he did refer the producers to us and they reached out to us to begin the journey – the rest, as they say, is history. A wild ride – it’s been fun and exciting and overwhelming and nerve wracking. Regardless of what happens in the Tank with the Sharks, the show’s process really pushed us to better know and understand our business.
Celebs Who Wear Shefits
We have multiple celebrities who have worn our bra – including Jaclyn Misch from CBS’s Survivor & Miss Michigan USA 2013, Val Smith from Team USA volleyball and Team USA bobsled. Crystal Bradford the first round pick by the LA Sparks in the WNBA 2015 Draft and Michelle DeFraites, an actress from several Disney television programs and 2015’s Project Almanac. Maria Rendina, who is 2015 Miss Michigan Teen USA, and Sharna Burgess, who is a dancer from Dancing with the Stars.
Plans for the Future
We plan to continue to make the very best sports bras for women of all sizes. We plan to exceed our sales goals while supporting women on their journey to exceed their personal goals. We’re not backing down! We’ve been able to assemble a rag-tag group of employees and we continue to refine, improve, and innovate with our bra – and we plan to succeed. Big.
