Texas will hold its primary for both parties on Tuesday, March 1. No state has more importance for either the Republican or Democratic party on Super Tuesday than Texas. The state represents the largest number of delegates of any Super Tuesday state for both parties.

Here’s what you need to know about each party’s Texas primary:


Democratic Texas Primary 2016

DATE: Tuesday, March 1, 2016

POLLING HOURS: Voting will be open to registered voters from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. CT.

CANDIDATES IN THE RACE: Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are fighting for the Democratic nomination.

TYPE OF PRIMARY: Texas is an open primary for both parties. This allows registered voters to vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary. Voters had to be registered by February 1 to participate in either primary.

DELEGATES AT STAKE: There are 222 Democratic delegates at stake. The proportional method will be used to divide the delegates among the two candidates based on the results.

KEY ENDORSEMENTS: Bernie Sanders received endorsements from Rep. Marisa Marquez, former Texas Democratic Party Chair Charles Soechting, former state Sen. Hector Uribe and former state Reps. Domingo Garcia. Hillary Clinton received an endorsement from The Dallas Morning News.

LATEST POLLS: According to RealClear Politics, Clinton has an average lead of 26.3 percentage points on Sanders based on the early polling.

POLLING HOURS: Voting will be open to registered voters from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. CT.

CANDIDATES IN THE RACE: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson and John Kasich all remain in the race on the Republican side.

TYPE OF PRIMARY: Texas is an open primary for both parties. This allows registered voters to vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary. Voters had to be registered by February 1 to participate in either primary.

DELEGATES AT STAKE: There are 155 delegates at stake for the GOP candidates. The delegates will be divided among the candidates based on the results.

KEY ENDORSEMENTS: Ted Cruz has boasted he has the endorsement of 41 Texas lawmakers. Donald Trump announced the endorsement of former candidate Chris Christie in Fort Worth, Texas.

LATEST POLLS: According to RealClear Politics, Ted Cruz has an average lead of 7.2 percentage points in the early polling.
