Wisconsin Primary 2016: Date, Voting Hours & Key Information

Both the Democratic and Republican primaries take place on Tuesday, April 5. Both parties will enter Wisconsin in different circumstances.

There are a number of Democratic primaries and caucuses before the Wisconsin Democratic primary. On the GOP side, there are two weeks between the March 22 primaries and the Wisconsin primary. The Republican candidates will have a gap between nominating processes, and it will be interesting to see if the layoff has a positive effect on any of the candidates.

DATE: Tuesday, April 5, 2016

POLLING HOURS: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Eastern (7 a.m.-8 p.m. Central)

CANDIDATES IN THE RACE: Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders

TYPE OF PRIMARY: Wisconsin is an open primary. Voters can choose whether to participate in either the Republican or Democratic primary regardless of party affiliation.

DELEGATES AT STAKE: 96 delegates

KEY ENDORSEMENTS: Clinton has received endorsements from Rep. Gwen Moore and Rep. Tammy Baldwin.

LATEST POLLS: A Marquette poll conducted in late February had Sanders with a one percentage point lead over Clinton.

POLLING HOURS: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Eastern (7 a.m.-8 p.m. Central)

CANDIDATES IN THE RACE: Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Donald Trump

TYPE OF PRIMARY: Wisconsin is an open primary. Voters can choose whether to participate in either the Republican or Democratic primary regardless of party affiliation.

DELEGATES AT STAKE: 42 delegates (winner-take-all)

KEY ENDORSEMENTS: Cruz has received an endorsement from Rep. Glenn Grothman. Kasich received an endorsement from former Gov. Tommy Thompson. The majority of Wisconsin politicians who backed Marco Rubio have yet to announce their support of a new candidate.

LATEST POLLS: There have been no major polls conducted in March. The most recent poll was conducted by Marquette in late February. It had Trump with a ten percentage point lead over Rubio.
