On March 22, ISIS fighters detonated two bombs inside the departure hall of the Brussels’ international airport. The airport is located less than 10 miles north-east of the central area of the Belgian capital.

The vast airport stretches across three Flemish speaking communities in Belgium, Zaventem Machelen and Steenokkerzeel.

There are around 20,000 people employed for 260 different companies at the airport. According to Moodys, 39 percent of the airport is owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan from Canada.

After the attacks, the airport’s chief executive Arnaud Feist said Brussels Airport will be closed on March 23, reports Sky News.

The Daily Telegraph put the death toll at 34 with 136 injured.

In total, two bombs were detonated at the airport while another struck a metro station in the Belgian capital.

It’s estimated that 11 people died at the airport while 15 more were killed in the metro station. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel confirmed that there were “numerous” dead.

Initial reports said that the explosion at the airport happened close to an American Airlines desk, that has since been rebuffed by the airline.

A third bomb was found at the airport, it was destroyed by security forces.
