PMS Bites entered the Shark Tank with their chocolates designed especially for women during their time of the month. The treats, which are all natural and gluten free, contain herbs that aid in decreasing PMS symptoms such as bloating and cramping.
We interviewed CEO and founder Tania Green who described herself as a ‘one woman show’ who started the company with the help of Kickstarter and a startup accelerator called MassChallenge. She also credits Scott Noonan of Shark Tank’s Wicked Good Cupcakes and the founder of Stacy’s Pita Chips, Mark Andrus, with assisting her in the launch of her one-of-a-kind sweets.
When asked what feedback she has gotten from women, she said:
I love when women try these, tilt their heads back and say “Oh my God! So good!” It’s like an orgasmic experience for us. Most women suffer from PMS, so when women reach out to tell me that the product brightens their week, satisfies their sweet tooth, and makes them feel better, I feel like I have done my job.
As for her future plans, she hopes to see PMS Bites in gyms, yoga and cycling studios, and Whole Foods across the country. In 2017, the ambitious entrepreneur will be introducing Menopause Bites, Insomnia Bites, Hangover Bites and Diet Bites under her parent company, Everything Bites.
Here’s what else she told us about…
How Her Business Got Started
I started making PMS Bites in my tiny apartment in the North End of Boston in February of 2014. Let’s call it a Valentine’s gift to myself. When I PMS, I typically like rich, dense, chocolaty treats like brownies. I like to eat healthy and avoid sugar as much as possible, but when PMS strikes, my diet goes off the rails. I decided to make PMS Bites to help satisfy cravings without guilt.
Creating the Recipes
I created the recipes initially and found the perfect blend of herbs women commonly take for bloating, cramping, and irritability. I did a lot of research on which herbs work well for these symptoms and incorporated them into the recipe. It took about two months to perfect. I made, rolled and packaged 8,000 bites over several months. Now I have a production team that makes the bites with love from scratch.
Her Appearance on the ‘Tank’
Producers from Shark Tank found my company and asked me to apply. There are three ways they could have found me- my Kickstarter campaign, being a part of MassChallenge or lastly, the most fun way. I was in a coffee shop in Boston, and I overheard a man interviewing a woman for a job. When the woman left, I asked the man the company where he worked. He replied, ‘Actually, I am a producer for Dancing with the Stars.’ I nearly fell off my seat because I am a huge fan of Disney and ABC! He asked me what I did, loved the name, the product and my entrepreneurial drive, and took my business card. Two days later I received an email from Shark Tank on ABC asking me to apply. I’m not quite sure how Shark Tank found me, but I love this version the most.
