In a new ad released today, the Hillary Clinton campaign went right after Donald Trump‘s racist comments about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, the judge presiding over lawsuits against Trump University. In the 83-second ad, Clinton only uses the words of other Republicans to show that even those in his own party have backed away from Trump’s statements.
Much of the ad leans on comments by Republican strategist and CNN contributor Ana Navarro, who called Trump’s comments “highly offensive” on The Situation Room. Navarro continued:
How dare he. How dare he question a judge’s responsibility, a judge’s adherence to the Constitution, because he is of Mexican descent? This man was born in East Chicago. He is an American citizen. He is just as American as Donald Trump. Mexican-Americans bleed, just as any other American, when they go to war. They bled just as any other American on 9/11. They fight for America. They are Americans. And what he is doing is disgusting. I am livid about it, and if this is his strategy to win over Hispanics, he’s got a hell of a wake-up call coming to him come November.
The ad includes a quote from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who called it “one of the worst mistakes Trump has made.” Senate Majority Leader Mich McConnell said, “I couldn’t disagree more with a statement like that.” Current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan also said he disagreed with Trump’s statements. Ryan, McConnell and Gingrich have all endorsed Trump for president.
The video comes just a day before the primary in California, when Clinton could have the Democratic nomination wrapped up. She has already started steering her campaign to focus on Trump, especially after her speech on his foreign policy plans.
