The West Wing cast reunited last week at the ATX Television Festival, and on The Today Show this morning, they discussed the show’s legacy and weighed in on the 2016 election.
The show’s creator, Aaron Sorkin, said in the interview that he doubts there’s a whole lot of crossover between West Wing fanatics and Donald Trump fanatics.
“I don’t think that among Donald Trump’s base of support there are probably a lot of West Wing viewers,” Sorkin said. “But to the extent that there might be some, I think that they believe that Donald Trump is there Jed Bartlet.”
Bradley Whitford, who played Josh Lyman on the series, also said that Donald Trump is fantastic television, as so many horrible things are.
Hillary Clinton got a mention during the interview too, as Richard Schiff revealed that the senator from New York once wrote him a letter explaining why Toby Ziegler’s plan for fixing Social Security would not work.
Could we see more of The West Wing anytime soon? During the Today Show appearance, the creator certainly didn’t rule out a reboot. Sorkin said that if there was a way to bring back the series without harming its legacy, he would do it. The cast was also quite eager to say they would be on board for more episodes.
Sorkin was the creator and head writer of The West Wing for its first four seasons but left the show after that, being replaced for seasons five, six and seven. According to Variety, he revealed at the ATX Television Festival panel last week that he has still not watched the final three seasons, following advice given to him by Larry David that watching the show go on without him would just make him miserable.
