Donald Trump issued two short responses after eight people were killed at a busy mall on Friday in Munich, Germany. President Barack Obama also issued a statement.

Trump, the Republican candidate for the presidency, first issued a statement on his website.

Our prayers are with all those affected by the horrible attacks in Munich. This cannot continue. The rise of terrorism threatens the way of life for all civilized people, and we must do everything in our power to keep it from our shores.

On Twitter, Trump wrote, “God bless the people of Munich.”

The White House press secretary released the following statement from President Barack Obama:

The United States condemns in the strongest terms the apparent terrorist attack that has claimed innocent lives in Munich, Germany. We still do not know all of the facts, but we do know that this heinous act has killed and injured multiple individuals in the heart of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased, just as we wish those wounded a full recovery. In the midst of this tragedy, the United States will work closely with our German partners to whom we will make available any resources that would assist their investigation, as the President pledged. The resolve of Germany, the United States, and the broader international community will remain unshaken in the face of acts of despicable violence such as this.

CNN reports that Munich has been placed on lockdown and police initially said there are at least three attackers. But the one suspect who was killed turned out to be the only shooter.

No group took responsibility for the attack, but police said it “looks like a terror attack.” Later, police in Munich said the suspect had no ties to ISIS, reports ABC News.

Germany has been on edge in recent days. On Monday, a 17-year-old from Afghanistan attacked people on a train with an ax. ISIS later claimed that the man, identified as Muhammad Riyad, is “a soldier of the Islamic State.”
