During a press conference in the hours after the shooting, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards called it, "an absolutely unspeakable heinous attack." Gov. Edwards added, The violence, the hatred just has to stop." He also referred to the officers as "real life heroes." At that briefing, authorities didn't identify the shooter or the victims. While Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden said, "This is truly a sad day in Baton Rouge as we meet again behind senseless killings." The investigation remains active but officials were quick to make the public understand that the event was not an active shooter incident.
