PHOTOS: Remembering Baton Rouge Police Officer Matthew Gerald

Officer Matthew Gerald was identified as one of the three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers slain on July 17 by a suspect identified as Gavin Eugene Long. Police were called to Airline highway, which had been the previous site of protests, after receiving a call about a man behind a store with a gun. Gerald was one of those officers who responded, and he was killed, along with a fellow Baton Rouge police officer and a member of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Department. Baton Rouge has been the subject of protests since a local man, Alton Sterling, was killed outside a convenience store in the city by a Baton Rouge police officer, a shooting that was captured on cell phone video and remains under investigation. The Dallas police shooter had, in part, cited Sterling's shooting as motivation for his murdering of five Dallas police officers. In the Baton Rouge incident on July 17, three other officers were also shot, and one of them was in critical condition. Officer Gerald was a relatively new officer to the force; he had graduated from the police academy only in March, news accounts said, and he had only been patrolling by himself for 12 days, according to Fox 8 New Orleans. WAFB Channel 9 said Gerald was from Denham Springs. In addition to being a former Marine, Fox 8 New Orleans said Gerald was “a former Marine, a former Black Hawk Crew Chief in the Army. He just graduated from the BRPD Academy in March.” Gerald leaves behind his wife, Dechia, and two young children (pictured in family photo). When Dechia posted this family photo to Facebook before the shooting, friends had posted wishes for her husband's safety. She had also posted a news story on the shooting to Facebook asking for prayers before she knew that her husband had died. President Obama called the shooting a "cowardly act," said CNN. CBS News said the shooter was a former Marine who attacked the officers on his birthday. (Facebook)
