A man attacked two female Belgian police officers with a machete in the town of Charleroi while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

The “Allahu Akbar” account comes from the Charleroi police Twitter account, which reports that the man shouted the phrase and was initially reported to still be alive, although he was shot by a third officer. The two officers were not injured seriously. However, reports then said the attacker may have died.

UK Mirror translates the Belgian police Tweet as saying, “Two police officers injured by machete in front of police by someone shouting Allah Akbar. Individual was shot but is alive.”

The Mirror said that one of the police officers “sustained deep cuts to the face and was rushed to hospital,” whereas the second officer was “only slightly injured.”

The Wall Street Journal said both officers were female.

BBC said the man “shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (‘God is great’ in Arabic) during the assault outside the city’s main police station.”

BBC also said that Charleroi, where the attack occurred, “was used as a base by some of the jihadists involved in the attacks on Paris in November 2015 and Brussels last March.”
