Italy Earthquake: Photos of Destruction

Images of the destruction of a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck central Italy have surfaced. Entire towns have been buried, like Amatrice. According to the Associated Press, the mayor of the town "says residents are buried under debris and that the town 'isn’t here anymore.'" Above, rescuers carry a man in Amatrice. The earthquake hit at 3:36 am local time at the shallow depth of 6-miles, according to the United States Geological Survey. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, a shallow earthquake is defined as an earthquake that originates within 40-miles of the earth's outer surface. Scientific American writes that shallow quakes can be more prolonged, which can cause more damage by the end of the quake.(FILIPPO MONTEFORTE/AFP/Getty Images)
