During a state of the state address, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton passed out. The Democrat appeared to be okay shortly afterward. He was quickly attended to by EMTs. Gov. Dayton had been delivering his State of the State address and was 45 minutes into the speech when he fainted. In the above video, you can see Gov. Dayton drinking water before falling to the floor. The governor will turn 70 in three days time.
Fox Minneapolis’ Kelcey Carlson said that Gov. Dayton was “alert” after being helped back to his feet. Carlson’s colleague at Fox Minneapolis, Timothy Blotz, quoted House Minority Leader Melissa Hortman saying that Gov. Dayton was up all night putting the “finishing touches” on his address.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune’s Ricardo Lopez tweeted that Gov. Dayton “was conscious almost immediately after fainting.”
In the past, Gov. Dayton’s health has been a public issue. During a Minneapolis Star-Tribune feature in 2009, Gov. Dayton admitted to being a recovering alcoholic. The governor also mentioned that he has been treated for depression. Years later, in December 2015, the Star-Tribune reported on Gov. Dayton’s recovery from two spinal surgeries in three years. That piece mentioned that the governor walked with a cane.
