Obama ‘ObamaGate’ ‘Wiretapping’ Trump: Memes About Alleged Surveillance

President Donald Trump tweeted an accusation against former Democratic President Barack Obama that he wiretapped Trump Tower in October during the election, ala “Nixon/Watergate." Obama has not responded to the claim. The unfounded accusation stems from Trump listening to conservative radio host Mark Levin, who has been campaigning for an investigation into Obama's alleged "police state" tactics, reports Breitbart. Early Saturday morning, Trump said in 4 consecutive tweets: "Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism! Is it legal for a sitting President to be "wire tapping" a race for president prior to an election? Turned down by court earlier. A NEW LOW! I'd bet a good lawyer could make a great case out of the fact that President Obama was tapping my phones in October, just prior to Election! How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!" In the tweets, Trump referenced two major historical moments in America: McCarthyism and Watergate. McCarthyism was a campaign spearheaded by Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s against alleged communists in the U.S. government. Watergate was a major political scandal in the 1970s involving President Nixon's wiretapping of the Democratic Party's headquarters. The scandal led to the resignation of Nixon. (Twitter)
