Trump initiated the telephone call, the White House said, to condemn the St. Petersburg terrorist attack. According to CNN, “The official call between the two leaders was the first since shortly after Trump took office — when Trump spoke with Putin as well as four other world leaders in the same day. Putin also congratulated Trump hours after his electoral victory in November.”

The White House says the April 3 call focused on terrorism.

“President Trump expressed his deepest condolences to the victims and their loved ones, and to the Russian people,” the White House press release says of the April 3 Trump-Putin phone call. “President Trump offered the full support of the United States Government in responding to the attack and bringing those responsible to justice. Both President Trump and President Putin agreed that terrorism must be decisively and quickly defeated.”

As a train traveled from one station to another, a device packed with shrapnel exploded, causing panic as people fled the scene and emergency responders arrived on scene. In addition to the 11 deaths, about 50 others suffered injuries.

Photos and videos circulated on social media of the attack.

Since taking office, Trump has been unable to shake questions of his campaign’s purported links to Russia. In one of the most dramatic moments, FBI chief James Comey told Congress that his agency was investigating whether Trump campaign officials coordinated with Russian operatives allegedly attempting to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. Trump has heatedly accused the media of bias for focusing on the Russian questions, attempting to divert attention to questions of leaks and Bill and Hillary Clinton.

With all of the heightened tensions and drama, some social media users had fun imagining what Trump and Putin might also have said:
