Democrat Rob Quist is vying to represent Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Quist is in a battle with Republican Greg Gianforte for the House seat left vacant by former Rep. Ryan Zinke, who was confirmed as the secretary of the U.S. Department of Interior.

The election is May 25, and voters will decide who they want to replace Zinke. It’s either Gianforte, a businessman who had a failed run at governor in 2016, Libertarian Mark Wicks, or Quist.

Gianforte had led in the polls ever since the nominees were selected by each party, but a late-breaking accusation has his campaign in hot water.

On May 24, just hours before voters headed to the polling stations, Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault. He allegedly “body slammed” The Guardian U.S. Reporter Ben Jacobs at a campaign event.

The accusation thrusts Quist into the spotlight even more. It’s his first time ever running for political office, and he has never held a job within the government. Instead, Quist gained popularity in Montana through music.

Quist is a longtime bluegrass and country musician in the state. He started playing instruments and singing at a young age, and joined a singing group at the University of Montana — the Jubileers.

After graduating from the college, Quist pursued his musical dreams and joined The Mission Mountain Wood Band, a bluegrass and country rock band. The band toured nationally and had a couple of national performances on TV shows. The band broke up in 1982, so Quist and two other members formed the Montana Band. The band toured continuously and even won the Willie Nelson country challenge competition.

Quist took time off from touring and the band to focus on songwriting. The rest of the Montana Band continued to tour, but tragically died in a plane crash in 1987.

Following that, Quist launched a solo career and formed a band called Great Northern.

Through his solo career, Quist has written and recorded many songs for national TV and radio advertisements and shared the stage with numerous household names in the industry, such as Tim McGraw, Dolly Parton and Heart.

Because of his vast contributions to the music industry, he was the one of the first to be inducted into the University of Montana School of Fine Art‘s “Hall of Honors.”
