A Chicago man is accused of murdering the 12-year-old daughter of the former girlfriend he was once convicted of choking.

John Singleton, who was only recently released from prison for attacking the girlfriend, is accused of stabbing her daughter, Alexis Stubbs, to death after an argument.

The attack occurred on June 11, and the child’s brutal slaying has horrified the Chicago community.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Singleton Spent Time in Prison for Attacking Alexis’ Mother Previously

If ever there was a warning sign of potential violence, this is it: Singleton was recently released from prison for choking Alexis’ mother and “shoving her against a closet,” reported The Chicago Tribune. Police said that Singleton told the woman, “I will go to jail for you. I will kill for you,” according to The Tribune.

Singleton was “charged with four counts of domestic battery, unlawful restraint, aggravated battery by strangulation and aggravated domestic strangulation. Cook County court records show he pleaded guilty in December 2014 and was sentenced to three years in prison and two years of supervised release,” reported The Tribune, adding that Singleton was released on parole in the case in early April.

He has a lengthy criminal history that includes other crimes of domestic violence, reported The Tribune. According to Fox 32, Singleton was a convicted felon.

2. Alexis Was Stabbed in an Apartment Hallway & Beaten, Possibly With a Hammer

The child’s death was horrific.

According to ABC 7, Alexis “was apparently beaten and stabbed in the hallway just outside of her second floor apartment in the 4600-block of North Beacon Street around 9:45 p.m. She was apparently stabbed multiple times and a hammer may even have been used in her beating.”

The blood spattered 10 feet down the hall, reported Fox 32.

Police said that the murder stemmed from a domestic argument between the mother and Singleton.

3. The Child Was Described as Resembling Shirley Temple

Those who knew Alexis recalled the girl as having a sweet disposition.

Reginald Taylor, the building’s maintenance manager, told ABC 7: “So sweet, so sweet, she was a sweet girl. She put in your mind when she was little of Shirley Temple. She had the curly hair, such a sweet little girl.”

Alexis had only recently attended the funeral of a 13-year-old friend who drowned at a local beach.

4. Singleton Was Found Hiding in a Portable Toilet

The suspect was tracked down in a creative hiding spot: He was allegedly hiding out in a portable toilet at a construction site.

Police were led to the portable toilet by a pinging cell phone, according to reporter Courtney Gousman of WGN-TV.

5. Authorities Investigated a Previous Child Neglect Complaint Involving Alexis

There were reports of previous troubles in the home, but they were unproven.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services “disclosed it had been in contact with Alexis and her mother a little over a year ago, in May 2016, over a child-neglect allegation that the agency eventually deemed wasn’t credible,” reported Fox 32.

However, the television station quoted the maintenance man in the apartment building as saying that Alexis and her mother were like “Siamese twins” and the mother “really took care of her baby.”
