One tragedy has turned into another in Indianapolis, after multiple people were shot while attending the funeral service of a murder victim.
The funeral was being held for Jasmine Simone Moore, 28. Just a few weeks prior, she was shot and killed near a bakery while walking on the sidewalk.
The death of Moore left the surrounding community distraught as they look to find a reason and a suspect in the senseless murder.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Moore Was Murdered Outside of a Bakery
Moore was shot and killed in Indianapolis early in the morning of July 8. Police said the shooting happened at around 3:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Tremont Street, near a Long’s Bakery and the Sunset Strip Gentleman’s Club.
A report by Fox 59 said Moore was walking outside of the bakery when the shooting occurred. At the time she was shot, 30-40 people were leaving the nearby gentlemen’s club, and police say she was caught in the middle of gunfire.
Moore was rushed to a medical facility but was pronounced dead there. A motive in the shooting hadn’t been determined and no suspects were identified.
2. Three People Were Shot During Her Funeral Procession
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the Sutherland Park Cemetery in the area of Temple Avenue and Millersville Road on July 20.
Moore’s funeral started at around noon, and police say they found a female victim that had been shot at the scene. Two others were also shot during the funeral and “showed up at the hospital,” The Indy Channel reported.
Police continue to investigate the shooting and look for suspects, and it appears to be gang related.
3. One of the Victims in the Shooting Is a Notorious Gang Leader
Grundy was shot “multiple times” during the funeral in the right arm, torso and leg and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. He entered surgery and is currently listed as being in stable condition.
Grundy has been involved in several murders, including one in 2014 where investigators claimed a suspect shot and killed a man on the orders of Grundy.
Earlier this year, officials from the Marion County Prosecutors Office dropped murder charges against the suspect. The charges against Grundy “were long ago dismissed.”
In 2016, Grundy was the subject of felony cocaine dealing charges. He was scheduled for a jury trial on charges of dealing the drugs and carrying a handgun without a license. But those charges were also dropped in March 2016 because of “evidentiary problems,” officials said.
4. Moore Recently Obtained a Cosmetology Certificate
A report by The Indy Channel following Moore’s death told a bit more about her background.
Moore left behind a 6-year-old son named Jace when she was murdered outside of the bakery. Now her mother, Stephanie Tinnin, has to watch over him and inform him of where his mother went.
“How do you do that?,” she asked during an interview with the news outlet. “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.”
Tinnin said that her daughter had just recently graduated from the Paul Mitchell School with a cosmetology certificate and was looking to start a career in the field. She added that Moore was leaving a nightclub in the area when she was shot.
“They heard shooting and started running and my baby had to be the one to get killed,” she told the publication.
A vigil and prayer service was held July 10, where family members, friends and members of the community gathered to remember her life and search for answers.
“I just want to know my daughter’s killer is behind bars,” Tinnin said.
5. A GoFundMe Was Set up to Support Her Family
A friend of Tinnin set up a GoFundMe account to support the family since Moore was murdered.
The campaign description said that funds would go toward funeral costs for Moore and also support her son, who’s now motherless.
She loved her family and friends. On that night a careless shooter took everything from her family and her mother is left with the heavy burden of raising her 6 year old son, medical expenses and funeral arrangements because this was such an unexpected tragedy. This family stands in need of prayer. Anything you can donate to help this family with funeral expenses will be highly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any future donations that may be made.
In 10 days, the campaign raised just over $1,100.
