Hurricane Harvey will make landfall in Texas on Friday night or early Saturday morning, forcing sports events throughout Southeast Texas to be cancelled or postponed. Harvey will be the first hurricane to make landfall in Texas since Hurricane Ike in 2008.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that the storm will make a direct hit on the Texas Gulf Coast and is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 storm. NOAA is predicting rainfall totals over 35 inches in some areas, with most getting between 15 and 25 inches. It could reach max wind speeds of 120 miles per hour.

With these warnings in mind, the Houston Independent School District has already cancelled classes for Monday, which was supposed to be the first day of school. The district also cancelled all sports activities, including practices and games.

Although the NFL’s Houston Texans have a preseason game scheduled for Saturday, they are playing the Saints in New Orleans. The team said they are keeping an eye on the storm. “I pray for all of us back in Houston and hope everybody stays safe,” head coach Bill O’Brien told the media. The team is already in Louisiana.

Texas’ other major sports teams are on the road. The Houston Astros are in Anaheim to play the Angels. The Texas Rangers, who play in Arlington, are on the road in Oakland.

However, as Sporting News points out, the Rangers and Astros begin a series against each other in Houston on Tuesday. The Astros planned to fly home on Sunday night to spend an off day in Houston. The Rangers planned on flying from Oakland to Houston on Sunday. Those plans could be changed because of the hurricane.

The Corpus Christi Hooks, a Double-A minor league baseball team affiliated with the Astros, had a double-header planned against the Midland RockHounds on Friday. Both games were cancelled. This means that Astros catcher/DH Evan Gattis, who was scheduled to make a rehab appearance, will not be playing and he went home to Houston early because of the storm.

The MLS’ Houston Dynamo and NWSL’s Houston Dash had matches scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium, but both games have been postponed. Saturday’s Dynamo match against Sporting Kansas City will be played on October 11. The Dash game against the North Carolina courage hasn’t been rescheduled yet.

On August 16, the University of Texas San Antonio announced plans to hold UTSA Football Fan Day, so fans could meet their favorite players at the Convention Center. However, UTSA cancelled the event because of the hurricane. All three UTSA campuses are closing at 5 p.m. on Friday. All evening and weekend classes, programs and events scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday have been cancelled.
