A knife attack was carried out in Turku, Finland. The city center is under lockdown with possible dead. Finnish media reports 2 people are dead and 6 people have been injured. Finnish tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reports that one of the attacked was a woman pushing a stroller. BBC adds that following the stabbing, the attacker was shot and held.
Is the Islamic State behind it?
As of now, it is unknown. Video has emerged of a stabber yelling, “Allahu Akbar!” The cry means “God is the greatest” and is a common Islamist phrase.
However, some Finnish people contest this.
According to Paula Risikko, the interior minister of Finland, the assailant appears to be “foreign looking.”
News of the attack has also spread fast on Telegram, a popular, encrypted messaging app used by terrorist organizations.
However, there has not been an official claim by ISIS’ “official” Amaq News agency.
This is a developing story.
