The daughter of a prominent Manhattan ballet couple was arrested for allegedly committing several burglaries along with a male friend in Camden, Maine in late July.
Talicia Martins, 21, was taken into police custody August 3 along with 20-year-old Jacob Flanagan for breaking into several businesses in late July and stealing thousands of dollars.
Martins is the daughter of Darci Kistler, a former New York City Ballet principal, and Peter Martins, the current master-in-chief of the company. The Martins family net worth is estimated at around $3 million.
Camden police said that both drugs and alcohol played a role in the thefts, though they didn’t specify further.
Here’s what you need to know about Martins and the incident:
1. Martins & Flanagan Allegedly Stole Over $1,000 From Multiple Businesses
Martins and Flanagan are both from Manhattan and were charged by police with breaking into and burglarizing a Smoothie Shack, Francine Bistro and Camden Cone in Maine. The string of burglaries took place late in the evening July 30 into July 31, the Bangor Daily News reported.
Martins was charged with burglary as well as felony theft, while Flanagan was charged one day later with three counts of burglary, three counts of felony theft and criminal trespassing.
Authorities said that close to $2,000 was stolen from the businesses, and that both drugs and alcohol were factors.
Following their arrests, Martins and Flanagan were both released on $1,500 cash bond from the Knox County Jail in Rockland, Maine.
2. A Video Shows the Pair Walking Down the Street After the Burglaries
Martins and Flanagan were unidentified prior to being arrested, and were only caught after an anonymous tip led police to them, detective Curt Andrick said to the Bangor Daily News.
The Camden Police Department had released surveillance video footage of the two walking down the street in Camden dressed in all black. In the video, which is posted above, Martins and Flanagan seen wearing all black clothing as they pass a nice-looking convertible car.
As they walk by, Flanagan walks up to the vehicle and appears to look inside, but the pair continue walking down the street.
3. Martins Was Arrested For Drug Possession in June
This isn’t Martins’ first time in trouble with the law, as she was arrested just a few months ago for being in possession of drugs in New York.
In June, she was caught with crack cocaine, heroin and a hypodermic needle in her parents’ Manhattan apartment on West End Avenue, the New York Post reported.
That case is still going through the court system, and she reportedly faces jail time for the charges.
4. Peter Martins Was Accused of Abusing His Wife 1 Year After Marrying Her
Martins’ father, Peter, is the master-in-chief of New York City Ballet. Previously, he was a principal dancer with the company as well as with the Royal Danish Ballet. He retired from dancing in 1983 and has been the master-in-chief ever since.
Darci is a popular ballerina and is said to be “the last muse” for famed choreographer George Balanchine. Peter and Darci met through ballet and got married in 1991, however drama arose just one year after they tied the knot.
In July 1992, Peter was arrested on charges of assaulting Darci after he allegedly cut her arms and legs, but the charges were later dropped by his wife.
A few years after the incident, Darci was pregnant with Talicia. She gave birth to her on June 13, 1996.
The New York Post caught up with Peter on August 8 upon the news breaking that his daughter had been arrested for the burglary, and a reported asked him if Talicia had been getting treatment for her reported drug problem.
Peter told the news outlet that his daughter was “fine” and added that he had “nothing else to say” before closing his door.
5. Martins Had Contributed to Magazines & Was a Model
Talicia has been a contributor in several glamour magazines in recent years and has been spotted on the red carpets of numerous fashion shows. In 2013, she was featured in a fashion photo gallery for Vanity Fair, the Bangor Daily News reported.
In addition to the photo shoot, Martins contributed to a 2015 Teen Vogue article in which she talked about how important it was for those pursuing a college degree to take off a year before doing so.
The article was titled “How I took a Year Off Before Starting College, and Why You Should Too,” and she spoke about her adventures exploring around the world before entering her freshman year of college.
Martins wrote that she had traveled to Iceland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Croatia, Italy, the Czech Republic, France, Spain and Greece in the “gap year.”
“Needless to say, it was one of the best years of my life,” she wrote.
Martins continued describing how memorable the year-long European vacation experience was, saying that she “had to get lost to know where (she) was going.”
