A New Hampshire woman is behind bars after being accused of putting her roommate’s ferret in the oven, killing him. Rest in peace Angel. WHDH reports that Ivana Clifford, 26, was arrested on November 8 and accused of the heinous killing. Police believe Clifford alleged that her roommate had been stealing the suspect’s clothes. That allegation has not been confirmed by authorities. Angel was two years old.

1. Clifford’s Roommate Said: ‘Losing a Ferret Is Like Losing a Kid’

At around 3 a.m. on November 8, firefighters were called to Clifford, who is 32 weeks pregnant, and Murray’s apartment, reports WHDH. Although before they got there, the gruesome discovery had already been made by Murray’s boyfriend.

Murray told the station that Clifford put the animal in the oven and turned it on. “How can someone be so cruel to [put] an animal in your oven and cooking it alive… To lose a ferret is like losing a kid. I just can’t believe she did that.” Murray added that Clifford had been angry over stolen clothes.

2. Clifford’s Husband Said His Wife: ‘Never Hurt an Animal in Her Life’

Speaking to WMUR, Clifford’s husband, James Clifford, said he “hadn’t heard the full story, but doesn’t think she’s violent.” James Clifford added, “All my friends have cats and dogs. She’s never hurt an animal in her life, and I don’t think she would do it.”

3. Clifford Is Homeless & Was Staying With Murray Temporarily

Murray told the police that Clifford and her husband were homeless and had been staying with them temporarily, reports WMUR. The couple added that Clifford left the building and the area after the smoke alarm went off.

4. A Judge Accused Clifford of Being a ‘Sadist’

Clifford is being held by the Manchester Police Department on charges of animal cruelty. Her bail was set at $10,000 after her arraignment at Hillsborough County Superior Court. Murray told WHDH that Angel nipping Clifford’s foot had been the final straw. Murray described the incident to NECN, “Just nipped her, didn’t even draw blood, and that’s why she killed our ferret.”

Judge Gillian Abramson told Clifford, “These allegations display a profound sense of sadism. That is of deep concern to this court. And for that reason, I am setting bail in the amount of $10,000 cash only. I will not release her to the Elliot or Catholic Medical Center.” Clifford’s lawyer, Callan Maynard, said, Clifford’s husband was “very concerned for her health and her welfare, and being incarcerated because she is 32 weeks pregnant, your honor.” If Clifford posts bail, she is not allowed to return to Murray’s apartment, reports CBS Boston.

WMUR reports that Murray and and her boyfriend, James Klimavich, have two other ferrets who they are “holding tightly” after Angel’s death. Murray said, “I don’t understand why she would do such a thing. It’s disturbing. It’s emotional. It’s sick. She’s a sick, twisted girl.” While Klimavich added, “Our youngest ferret, Angel, was in the oven, dead.”

Murray told CBS Boston that Angel was “very friendly, she was so cute, she was very energetic, she would run around with the other ferrets.”
