AJ Baker, the son of Massachusetts’ Governor Charlie Baker, has been accused of sexual assaulting a woman on a JetBlue flight. CBS Boston broke the story on June 22 that Andrew Baker, known as AJ, is being accused of repeatedly touching a woman on board a plane. AJ was sitting beside the woman, according to the report, and because of her complaints, staff on the flight moved her to another seat. The incident occurred on June 20. WCVB reports that AJ was flying from Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C.

JetBlue issued a statement to the CBS affiliate saying, “On June 20, the crew of flight 1345 were notified of an incident between customers shortly before landing in Boston. The aircraft landed at approximately 11 p.m. local time where it was met by local authorities.” The alleged offenses took place around 20 minutes before the flight was due to land. AJ was escorted from the flight by Massachusetts State Police.

No charges have been brought against AJ. with a spokesperson for the governor saying it was a “personal matter.” Baker’s attorney, Roberto Braceras, said in a statement to CBS Boston, “Andrew is fully cooperating and is looking forward to the resolution of this matter.” The governor himself made a statement on June 25 reiterating that his son would co-operated with the U.S. Attorney’s office in the matter.

According to his LinkedIn page, AJ is the performance marketing manager at WHOOP, a gym franchise. Previously, AJ Baker worked in business development at Allen & Gerritsen. While in school, AJ was a marketing intern for the New England Patriots. AJ is a graduate of Union College, class of 2016, in upstate New York where he studied political science and government with a minor in sociology. During his time at the school, AJ was the president of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity as well as captain of the school’s football team. Governor Baker gave the commencement address for his son’s graduating class.

AJ was featured in a college publication during his time at Union College. The piece reads that AJ was a “campus cutie [who] is the Abercrombie model of the Union Football team and can be seen putting smiles on all faces across campus.” It continues, “In his spare time he likes long walks on the beach and listening to rap music.” It adds that AJ “hates heights but of course he is willing to let any lady take him to new heights.” AJ goes on to say that his celebrity crush is Jessica Alba and that the first thing he looks for in a partner is “someone who can make [him] laugh.” His ideal date would be, “Definitely dinner in Boston because it has amazing restaurants and is a great place to bring someone.” When asked if he was more interested in personality or looks, AJ said, “Looks catch the eye and personality is what truly develops a connection between two people but for me it is a combination of both.”


3. AJ’s Older Brother Told Him, ‘Work You Butt Off, Never Give Up No Matter How Hard it Gets’

AJ’s profile on Union College’s official website says that he played as a wide receiver for the school’s team. The bio refers to him as a “leader” and says that he is a “great route runner.” In 2015, AJ won The Chris Schmid “Pay it Forward” Award during the 18th Annual John Speer Union College Football Banquet.

On his MaxPreps page, AJ says that he attended Swampscott High School in Swampscott, Massachusetts. AJ graduated from the school in 2012. His final game in his senior year was covered by the Swampscott Patch, where AJ’s career at the school was described as “great.” At the stage, AJ’s brother, Charlie Junior, was just finishing his football career at Denison University in Ohio, according to Wicked Local. Charlie was also a president of frat, Sigma Chi, during his college life. In the Wicked Local piece, Charlie had some advice for this brother, “I told A.J. to expect to work his butt off, and to never give up no matter how hard it gets. There are times you think ‘screw this, it’s too much work, I’m not getting the recognition I deserve,’ but I told him to keep doing it and it’ll all be worth it.”

In October 2015, Swampscott High School’s football team was involved in a hazing scandal when a group of younger players were found doing athletic drills naked by police, according to Salem News. Governor Charlie Baker said his sons were “angered and crushed” by the allegations. The governor added, “Let’s suffice to say my boys used some very colorful language to describe the whole thing.”


4. Governor Baker Said in 2016 that He Was Not Warned of the Potential for Addiction With the Painkillers His Son Was Prescribe

Governor Baker said in June 2016 that he and his family had not been warned by doctors over the potential for AJ to develop an addiction to painkillers he was prescribed to deal with football-related injuries, reported the Boston Herald. In January 2015, the Berkshire Eagle reported that Governor Baker had previously spoken of his concern that AJ would develop a reliance on Percocet after breaking his arm while playing college football.


5. When His Father Was Sworn in as Governor, AJ Nearly Missed the Ceremony After Getting Stuck in an Elevator

When AJ went to the statehouse to watch his father take the oath of office and be sworn in as the 72nd governor of Massachusetts in January 2015, WCVB reported that AJ became stuck in an elevator with some other family members for 20 minutes. The incident did not result in AJ missing his father’s ceremony.
