Times Square Ball Drop: Journalists Honored on New Year’s

Rebecca Blumenstein

Rebecca Blumenstein is the deputy managing editor at the The New York Times. She has also been selected as one of the journalists chosen to push the button to drop the ball on New Year's Eve 2018 in Times Square. The inclusion is meant to highlight press freedom.

On Twitter, she writes, "NYT Deputy Managing Editor. Former WSJ Deputy Editor and China bureau chief." She joined the New York Times in 2017. According to QZ.com, Blumenstein, at the time she left, "remains the highest-ranking woman to lead the the Journal’s news organization to date."

She offered advice for other female journalists, telling QZ: “A long time ago I learned a couple techniques, and one is that I speak up early in meetings." She has three children.

According to her biography on Bloomberg, Rebecca Blumenstein was Deputy Managing Editor of International at The Wall Street Journal since January 11, 2010.

"Ms. Blumenstein served as a Managing Editor of WSJ.com at The Wall Street Journal Online from June 9, 2009 to January 11, 2010. Ms. Blumenstein served as an International News Editor of New York Journal at The Wall Street Journal from December 2008 to June 9, 2009. Ms. Blumenstein served as the Head of China Bureau at The Wall Street Journal since August 2005. She oversaw the coverage of China's economy and the impact of its transformation on business, economies and nations around the world," the biography states.

"Ms. Blumenstein previously served as Chief of the Journal's New York Technology Group, which has covered the historic mergers and changes in technology that have recast the U.S. telecommunications industry. Prior to that, she was the Journal's Deputy Chief and a Reporter covering AT&T Corp. and WorldCom Inc. Ms. Blumenstein joined the Journal in 1995 as a Reporter in the Detroit bureau, where she covered General Motors. She began her journalism career at the Tampa Tribune, and then later moved to Gannett Newspapers and Newsday, where she covered breaking news and the New York State legislature. In March 2009, she was named to the Aspen Institute's Henry Crown Fellowship for 2009. Ms. Blumenstein received a 1993 New York Newswomen's Award for best deadline writing for her coverage of the aftermath of the Long Island Railroad shootings. Ms. Blumenstein holds a bachelor's degree in economics and social science from the University of Michigan."
