Chargers vs Washington Preview

Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will take the reins from Alex Smith for Washington at quarterback this season. WFT finished last year with a 7-9 record, making the playoffs before getting knocked out in the Wild Card round. Now entering his 17th NFL season, Fitzpatrick completed 68.5% of his passes for 2091 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions last year while with the Miami Dolphins.

Fitzpatrick will be without one of his top targets in wide receiver Curtis Samuel in this one, however. Samuel missed practice this week leading up to the game, and the team placed him on injured reserve the Friday before the game.

“We’re just trying take a little bit of pressure off him in terms of his rehab program,” Rivera said on Friday.

Washington had one of the better defenses in the league last season, led by Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young. WFT finished second in the NFL in total defense, allowing 304.6 yards and 20.6 points per game, while Young finished with 7.5 sacks.

On the other side, the Chargers have a new head coach in defensive-minded Brandon Staley, who has a unique perspective, as he is also a former quarterback. Staley, the ex-Rams DC, will be tasked with shoring up a defense that allowed 26.6 points a game last year.

Staley will also be charged with bringing rookie Justin Herbert along in his second season after Herbert won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award last season. Herbert completed 66.6% of his passes for 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, and he also rushed for 234 yards and five scores.

The Chargers have begun reshaping their offensive line around Herbert, drafting the talented Rashawn Slater in the first round while also adding former Green Bay Packers All-Pro center Corey Linsley to the mix. With Keenan Allen and Mike Williams his top targets and running back Austin Ekeler leading the way in the backfield, Herbert should have plenty of weapons to work with.

Staley also said his young QB has improved a great deal mentally this offseason. “Justin just knows a lot more football,” Staley said. “When you’re in the NFL, you just learn so much more. One year ago, what he knew, what I knew, are totally different.”
