‘The Good Father: The Martin MacNeill Story’ Preview

Starring Tom Everett Scott as the titular Dr. Martin MacNeill, “The Good Father” tells the story of MacNeill and “the incredible life he led with his former beauty queen wife, Michele (Carpenter) and their eight children,” according to the Lifetime description.

It continues:

A pillar of the community, he was respected and loved by all especially by his daughter Alexis (Anwen O’Driscoll) who adored him and even wanted to follow in his footsteps to become a doctor. But everything soon changes after Dr. MacNeill convinces Michele (Charisma Carpenter) to have plastic surgery, ultimately leading to her drowning while on prescription medication.

Just a few short weeks after his wife’s suspicious death, Dr. MacNeill brings home Gypsy Willis, a new live-in “nanny” for his children but who is in actuality his mistress. Shocked by her father’s actions, Alexis begins to question everything she has known about him and discovers the depth of his lies, including his bogus medical credentials, falsified military records, and that the man and good doctor she once revered, was capable of murder.

The real-life events happened in April 2007. ABC News reported in 2019 that after Michele’s death, several of the MacNeill children “led a dogged campaign” to have their mother’s death investigated, which led to “decades of secrets” and a high-profile trial.

Michele’s sister Linda Cluff told ABC News, “[Michele] was a dream of a big sister. [Michele] was popular, he was athletic, she was great in school. She also loved music and she played the violin… we were all very proud of her.”

“All she cared about, I mean, is her family. I mean, her family was her life,” added Michele’s daughter Alexis.

Another daughter, Rachel, told ABC News that her father changed when he turned 50 years old, saying, “He started acting very strangely … He became just very obsessed with losing weight and his appearance. He’d go to the tanning salons.”

The family told ABC News that Michele had never talked about having plastic surgery before and that it felt like their dad insisted on it. Then after the surgery, Alexis revealed to ABC News that her mother confided in her: “She started to cry. She said, ‘If anything happens to me, make sure it wasn’t your dad.”

“The Good Father: The Martin MacNeill Story” premieres Saturday, October 2 at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific times on Lifetime.
