Patriots vs Chargers Preview

When these two teams played last year, New England won in convincing fashion, 45-0. The Chargers are hoping to have different results this year, and they’re also hoping to avoid losing two games in a row for the first time all season.

Los Angeles is coming off their second loss of the season, and it was a bad one, as the team got shellacked by Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, 34-6, last week. Second-year QB Justin Herbert had a quiet day, completing 22 of 39 passes for 195 yards, a touchdown and an interception. It was a down game for Herbert, who didn’t get much help, as the Chargers couldn’t manage more than 26 rushing yards on the day. Still, the Pats aren’t about to overlook Herbert and company.

“He’s really good,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said about Herbert. “I thought he was outstanding. He just really had everything you’re looking for. He’s very athletic. Good arm. A lot of poise. Played well in Oregon. Just a number of big plays. All the passes. All the throws, but extended plays, scrambles, could run the read-zone and all that. He’s as good a quarterback as I’ve seen come out here in quite a while, especially as it fits the pro game. I don’t think you’re going to find too many better than him. This guy is really an impressive player. I thought he was really good when we played them last year, and, luckily, we had a pretty good day, but I’m not counting on that again.”

The Patriots are fresh from a 54-13 drubbing of the New York Jets last weekend. Quarterback Mac Jones had arguably the best game of his young career, completing 24 of 36 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Damien Harris also continued his impressive season, carrying the ball 14 times for 106 yards and two scores in the rout.

Defense has been a weak spot for the Chargers, as they’ve allowed 364.3 total yards and 25.0 points a game on the season. Now, first-year head coach Brandon Staley has to figure out how to do enough to beat one of the all-time greats in Belichick.

“He’s an outstanding offensive coach,” Staley said. “I think that’s something he doesn’t get enough credit for. He’s an outstanding offensive coach, defensive coach, and special teams coach. That’s why they’ve played the way they’ve played up there for so long; because he’s a complete coach. That’s something I’m trying to be. If I had to say the biggest takeaway from him, for me, is that he’s a complete coach.”

New England has a 23-14-2 all-time edge in the series against the Chargers.
