Patriots vs Jets Preview

Wilson and the Jets are coming off a 19-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers last weekend. The rookie QB went 20-37 for 258 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in his debut, but the lack of a run game crippled the offense, making New York one-dimensional. The Jets managed just 45 yards on the ground, and Wilson was sacked six times in the loss.

On defense, the Jets allowed Panthers superstar Christian McCaffrey 187 yards from scrimmage, but they held firm on third down, allowing just four firsts in 14 attempts on the pivotal down. Under the direction of new head coach Robert Saleh, New York is focused on shoring up their ‘D’ in a big way.

“When offenses can generate an explosive play in a drive, their percentages of scoring are astronomical,” Saleh said. “It’s almost guaranteed that they’re going to get three points. Two explosives in a drive, you might as well just put seven on the board and kick the ball off. So, the objective is to make them go earn it.”

The rookie Jones will be making his second start against this hungry Jets defense, but New York isn’t about to overlook the rookie QB out of Alabama.

“He’s way better than I wanted him to be,” Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said about Jones. “You anticipate seeing a young, inexperienced quarterback making young inexperienced decisions. But you didn’t see a whole lot of that. I think he has real skill and poise.”

Jones performed well in the season opener, completing 29 of 39 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown in New England’s 17-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins last weekend. The Pats had eight penalties for 84 yards, which didn’t help Bill Belichick’s squad get much of a rhythm.

New England played solid defense in the loss, though, allowing just 259 total yards and 74 yards on the ground.

Here’s a look at the injury report for both teams heading into the game:

Patriots:

  • OUT: K Quinn Nordin, Abdomen, LB Kyle Van Noy, Throat
  • QUESTIONABLE: T Trent Brown, Calf, T Yodny Cajuste, Hamstring ,LB Ronnie Perkins, Shoulder, TE Jonnu Smith, Hip

Jets:

  • DOUBTFUL: LB Jamien Sherwood, Ankle
  • QUESTIONABLE: WR Keelan Cole, Knee, WR Jamison Crowder, Groin, OL Chuma Edoga, Illness (Non-Covid), CB Isaiah Dunn, Shoulder
