How to Make Eggnog: The Easy & Traditional Recipe

You will need these ingredients:

1 cup milk
1/2 cup white sugar
4 large egg yolks
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
1/2 cup rum, brandy or bourbon (optional)
1 cinnamon stick (optional)

In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk milk and sugar until sugar is dissolved.
In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks.
While whisking constantly, pour hot mixture from the saucepan into the yolks slowly and steadily.
Put this mixture back into the original saucepan. Cook over medium to low heat for 20-25 minutes, while stirring often. In the end, it should be thick enough that it coats the back of a spoon.
Strain right away into a bowl.
Stir in the cream. If you want to make it alcoholic, now put in the rum, brandy or bourbon.
Cool completely, then cover with plastic wrap.
Refrigerate until it’s chilled.
If you so desire, garnish with nutmeg.
Pour into a punch bowl and ladle out for your guests. Add a cinnamon stick to each of their glasses.
