Top 10 Cool Christmas Gifts for Scotch Lovers 2017

scotch gifts, whiskey gifts, gifts for scotch drinkers, gifts for whiskey drinkers

Scotch drinkers tend to be a bit fanatical about their beverage of choice. They’ll start talking about Islay and Skye as if everyone is right there with them. They’ll give you a look of disgust if you say whiskey is just whiskey. They have a lot more interest in peat bogs than the average person. I know all this because I’m a Scotch drinker. I love it. Everything from Bruichladdich to the venerable Lagavulin, I’ve tried dozens of them. I know how to shop for a bottle for a fellow drinker.

On the other hand, if you don’t know the first thing about Scotch (or even that it’s different than bourbon), you might not want to venture to the liquor store and guess. You could get a gift certificate, sure. But if you have your heart set on giving a gift, not to worry. We’ve compiled this list to help even the uninitiated choose a gift.

If you have a Scotch drinker on your Christmas list, consider our list of cool gifts for people who drink Scotch.

1. Handcrafted Soapstone Whiskey Stones – Set of 9

(Polar Stones)

For those who like their Scotch chilled somewhat, whiskey stones are the way to go. They cool your drink without diluting the delicate flavors often present in a fine single malt. This set is handmade of soapstone and add a note of rustic sophistication to any bar set.

(Ravencroft)

While most folks drink their Scotch from tumblers (we’ll get to those later), the best experience comes from small glasses with narrow openings. Similar to wine, the aromas of Scotch heavily influence the flavor, and by using a narrower opening, the drinker gets a stronger sense of the flavor. I like the shape of this set, though a more common variation is available here for less.

3. Glencairn Iona Scotch Whisky Pitcher or Mini Water Jug

(Stolzle)

The best way to get a glass of fine Scotch to “open up” is to add a few drops of mineral water to the glass. Experts say you should taste it first, of course, but if you prefer a whiskey that does well with a touch of water, this little pitcher is a nice complement to a glasses set. I’ve been to several whiskey bars that serve a small pitcher of mineral water with the flight, so why not re-create the experience at home?

(Crystal Imagery)

A customized decanter makes a nice gift for any whiskey drinker. This is custom engraved crystal for the enthusiast on your list. Note that it taks 6 to 10 days to create, so if you opt for this one, order early. If you need quicker shipping, I’ve always been partial to Waterford crystal, myself.

5. Personalized Monogram Whiskey Glass

(Frederick Engraving)

Naturally, if you’re going to have a personalized decanter, you might as well have personalized glasses, as well. If you don’t opt for the snifter route, the classic tumbler glass is still a great option. They’re versatile, so you can use them for other spirits or even cocktails. Or water, I suppose, though I can’t imagine why you’d drink that. If you prefer, you can also buy a personalized set.

6. Personalized Oak Whiskey Barrel

(My Personalized Memories)

To give the Scotch drinker on your list a fun way to store their favorite tipple, try this personalized whiskey barrel. Some of these storage barrels claim to continue aging the spirit as it sits inside. We’re not sure what to make of those claims, but anything’s possible. Still, a handsome piece to set up on a home bar.

8. Signature Whiskey Elements

(Time and Oak)

Somewhat akin to the mini barrels, these Whiskey Elements are wood aging devices that you put into bottles of whiskey to give them more flavor. Although we’re a little suspicious of the manufacturer’s claim to turn a $20 bottle into a $60 bottle, the idea is at least interesting. The longer these have to sit in the bottle, the more benefit they will get from the charred American White Oak, so you may get some additional flavoring. Perhaps a good way to set up a cheaper bottle, and at this price, certainly worth trying and a good cheap gift.

9. Visol “Kenton” Leather Stainless Steel Hip Flask

While not recommended for your pricier bottles, a fine flask can come in handy for more run-of-the-mill Scotch. But a Scotch drinker can’t just have any flask. Get them this leather-clad piece as a distinctive gift. You can also get one in black. Don’t forget the funnel.

(Design Toscano)

If your Scotch drinker has many bottles of the good stuff stocked up, they’ll need a place to put it. This globe bar is a fine option and includes casters so it can be used in any area of the house with ease. There’s room for many bottles and glasses, so this should be the only storage solution needed.
