Halloween will be here before you know it. If you’re known throughout the neighborhood for your creepy, spooky costumes, our scary costume guide is here to help you frighten all your friends and neighbors. Whether you’re looking for a scary costume to wear while you take the kids trick or treating or a spine-chilling look to wear to a costume party, we’re certain you’ll find something perfect on our list. While many of the costumes on our list are designed for guys, we’ve also included some scary styles that will fit adult women. There are also some scary costumes that are perfect for the kids.
What makes a great scary costume? First things first, it should immediately send chills down your spine (or the spines of your friends and family). Some people are afraid of clowns, while others get freaked out by the sight of blood, even if they know its fake. You should think about whether you’ll be around mostly kids or mostly adults, and let that influence just how scary your costume gets.
When picking out your costume, you should consider your Halloween habits. If you’re the kind of person that tends to re-wear a costume, you may want to invest in a higher quality costume that will withstand wear, tear, and annual washing. If you are going to lots of Halloween events, and want a different look for each one, you might want to stick to a budget so you can afford multiple looks.
We’ve hand-picked a variety of creepy Halloween costumes for our new-for-2016 guide. Whether you’re into evil clowns, headless horsemen, flesh-eating zombies, gory prosthetics, or simply like striking a balance between freaky and funny, there’s something on our list below that will speak to your Halloween alter ego. Read on to see our favorite picks for Halloween 2016.
1. Rubie’s Giggles the Clown Costume
Between Stephen King’s It, American Horror Story: Freak Show, and the brand new Rob Zombie film 31, there are tons of reasons to be creeped out by clowns. And let’s not forget, real-life serial killer John Wayne Gacy moonlighted as a children’s party clown. These white-faced freaks are just plain creepy, even to those who don’t have any bad childhood memories associated with clowns.
There are lots of creepy clown costumes out there, but this one stands out for a couple of reasons. First of all, the mask is totally grotesque. The eyes and grinning smile are really unnerving. Secondly, the oversized hands are perfect for jumping out and grabbing someone to give them a good scare. Finally, this is a higher-end costume, so it’s more convincing and durable. If you’re looking for a scary clown costume you can wear year after year to different Halloween events, this will definitely stand the test of time.
Giggles comes with a deluxe latex mask, arm and hand extensions, a ruffled collar, and his clown shirt. You can personalize this costume with items from your own closet, or pick up a couple of extra items to make this costume more intense. We think it looks good with platform “monster” boots, or boot covers.
This is a great costume to wear in a haunted house, while greeting trick or treaters, while pranking your roommates, or while attending Halloween parties. It may be a little scary for young kids, but if you’re looking for a truly creepy costume, it’s hard to beat a killer clown.
2. Morph Costumes Womens Zombie Nurse Costume
Doctors and nurses are supposed to heal us when we’re sick, but this freaky zombie nurse just wants to infect you. If you were thinking about going as of the undead, this is a nice twist on a traditional zombie costume. It’s a good scary costume for women who live in areas where October is still fairly warm. Those who live further north may want to wear this costume with leggings, especially if they’ll be spending time outdoors.
This costume only includes the hat and dress. If you want to get the full look as pictured above, you’ll want to pick up white stockings, white pumps, and plenty of fake blood. An ombre wig in intense colors is a great way to make this white costume pop. We like this wig, but this paler alternate ombre wig with white hair is also a nice choice. A surgical mask is a nice finishing touch, although you might want to leave your mouth exposed so you can flash these bloody fangs.
If you want to match your significant other, this blood-soaked men’s suit is a great counterpoint to this zombie nurse look. This all-in-one zombie makeup kit is great for giving you both an unholy pallor. Either of you could also make your costume more menacing with the addition of a prop machete.
Price: $27.95 (30 percent off MSRP)
3. Rubie’s Gruesome Bat Creature Costume
With oversized, grasping claws, and jaws open wide enough to eat you whole, this is a great option for those who want to make a big entrance at a Halloween party. This creature costume includes a deluxe latex mask, arm and hand extensions, and a tattered robe. A voice changer would really take this costume to the next level, especially if you’re looking for a costume to use in a haunted house or haunted hayride setting.
4. Kangkang Plague Bird Doctor Nose Mask
During the Middle Ages, plague doctors wore these creepy masks while tending to the sick. The cone of the mask would be packed with botanicals to stave off “bad air” and mask the scent of the unwashed and the dying. There’s something sinister about these masks from such a dark period in human history. We like this company’s offerings because you can get the plague doctor mask in a variety of colors. In addition to the brown version pictured above, you can also get the mask in black, dark blue, or white. The white would look especially creepy paired with a more modern white doctor’s Halloween costume. We also think this scary costume piece looks great paired with a big duster coat and a flickering lantern.

5. California Costumes Sleepy Hollow Headless Horseman Child Costume
Have a son who loves creepy costumes? This lightly scary costume for boys makes it look like he has been decapitated. The gray color is see-through from the inside, so your child should be able to see just fine from within his spooky costume. The costume set includes a jacket with attached vest and belt, a vinyl headpiece, and an inflatable shoulder unit to give your son room for his head inside the body of the costume. Don’t forget to pick up a prop axe to complete this look, and make your son look more menacing.
If you have a daughter who also wants a spooky costume, this “haunted beauty” ghost costume for girls is a nice alternative to the Headless Horseman look.
6. FunWorld Pork Grinder Adult Pig Costume
This scary costume makes you think the pigs have come for revenge on all humans who ever enjoyed bacon. If you’re gonna be around a lot of vegans on Halloween, this is the costume to wear. This butcher pig costume set consists of the mask and apron, and will fit anyone up to 200 pounds and six feet tall. You’ll need to provide your own clothes to wear under the apron (unless you REALLY want to freak out your friends). You’ll also want to pick up a creepy cleaver, or the hook/chain prop pictured above.
One additional extra we recommend picking up is blood gel. Unlike the fake blood we recommended earlier in this guide, blood gel has a tackier consistency, and almost appears to clot over time. Drizzle some over your bare arms and hands to make your look more macabre. You could also carry some fake organs to make your costume really over the top and gory.
7. Muscle Morphsuit Fancy Dress Costume
This costume is just plain creepy, and it’s also really versatile. The same basic costume could be used to let you dress as a Titan from Attack on Titan, a flayed man who crossed the Boltons on Game of Thrones, or even a genderbent version of Sally Impossible from Venture Bros.
The thing that really ups the scare factor here is the ability to use your smartphone to create the illusion of a beating heart. There’s a special pouch on the chest of this suit. Download the free Morphsuits app, fire up the beating heart option, and place your smartphone in the chest pouch. It then looks like your beating heart is visible, which is super subtle and super gross. We also appreciate that this costume is built with an emphasis on comfort and quality. The material offers four-way stretch, with double zips and re-enforced stitching at stress points to keep the costume held together over time. You can see through the material, and the company even boasts that you could drink through the mask if you were so inclined.

Price: $34.73 – $112.87, depending on size and color selected
8. Seasonal Visions Brown Scary Teddy Bear Mask
This teddy bear is definitely not cute and cuddly. In our opinion, this creepy mask looks the most disturbing when paired with normal, everyday clothes. To make things really twisted, wear this mask with formal wear. You could add bear paws or bear slippers to your look as well. This is a look that will definitely freak out kids, and we also think it will upset a few adults as well.

9. Scary Presidential Candidate Masks
Looking for a scary costume that’s funny, too? With tempers high as we head towards Election Day, there are plenty of people out there that would say a Trump presidency would scare them (and plenty of folks who feel the same about Hillary Clinton). Whichever candidate you support, consider picking a costume that’s tied into current events. A Trump mask or Hillary mask can be paired with clothes from your closet to create a complete look.
10. Forum Novelties Men’s Zombie Attack Costume Shirt
One great way to scare people is to make it look like you’ve lost a limb. This cool zombie attack costume makes it look like hungry zombies gnawed your flesh down to the bone, or perhaps it simply rotted away. The set includes the arm with rigging strap, plus the shirt. The arm straps securely across the chest, and will fit up a 42 inch chest. To get really gruesome, we recommend adding these fake intestines to your costume. An open wound makeup kit is another cool option to consider.
