Burke attended Northland High School, in Columbus Ohio.

In High School Burke was national ranked by three different organizations prior to college. He was ranked 15th by ESPN, 20th by, and 26th by Rivals, as one of the best point guards in the nation at the time.

As a senior, Burke averaged 23.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 2.6 steals, finishing the season with 639 total points. He also won a multitude of titles in high school including the 2009 OHSAA Division I State Champions and 2011 OHSAA Division I State Runner-up, helped his high school Northland to four Columbus City League titles, three District titles and two regional titles.

Burke finished his high school career with 1,291 points and a 97-5 record, accumulating the most wins by any individual player in Northland history, was a PARADE Magazine All-America, the Associated Press Ohio Mr. Basketball, OHSAA Division I Co-Player of the Year, OHSAA Division I All-State First Team, along with a multitude of other awards and accolades during high school.

As a sophomore with Michigan, Burke won all the major national player awards including the Naismith Award, the Oscar Robertson and the Wooden.
