In his 16 NFL seasons in New England, Tom Brady has matured in the spotlight. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Brady, but he’s always been known as a family-first athlete.
Unlike just about every other NFL star, the 39-year-old Brady isn’t even the primary breadwinner in the family. His wife, Brazilian-born supermodel Gisele Bundchen, has an individual net worth of over $360 million.
Brady and the 36-year-old Bundchen are the ultimate sports and pop culture power couple. They also have two kids together, in addition to the son Brady has from a previous relationship.
Here’s what you need to know about the family:
1. Brady & Bundchen Kept Their Engagement a Secret
Brady and Bundchen did such a good job of keeping their engagement secret that the tabloids were publishing false stories of how it happened, according to Vanity Fair. Bundchen said the engagement happened long before their stories said, but she waited to start wearing her ring in public to avoid publicity.
Their wedding remained private, and reports included only descriptions of what happened instead of pictures. Bundchen said at the time that she’s not a fan of parties and wanted their wedding to be an intimate gathering of only the closest people.
2. Brady Has a Son From His Relationship With Bridget Moynahan
Bundchen knew Brady had recently gotten out of a relationship when they met, but what the pair didn’t know at the time was that his ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan, was pregnant. Moynahan told Brady that she would raise the baby on her own.
Bundchen told Vanity Fair in 2009 it put a damper on the new relationship.
“It was definitely a surprise for both of us,” Gisele acknowledges with a rueful smile. “In the beginning you’re living this romantic fantasy; you’re thinking, This can’t be true, it’s so good! And then, Whoops—wake-up call!” She rolls her eyes. “We were dating two and a half months when he found out, and it was a very challenging situation. Obviously, in the beginning, it’s not the ideal thing.”
In the same Vanity Fair article, Bundchen said that at first she wondered if Brady should repair things with Moynahan and find a way to be a traditional family. But she later realized that Brady’s handling of the situation made her see what he was really made of.
“I think it was a blessing, because otherwise I don’t think I would have known what he was made of, and he wouldn’t have known what I was made of,” she says. “I wouldn’t have seen the integrity in him—the way he was a good person through all the times. I was like, You have the heart in a good place! It made me feel more in love with him; it made me realize who he was. Our relationship has become so much stronger, and I think I wouldn’t be as certain as I am today if it weren’t for that.”
3. Brady Wasn’t in the Room When Moynahan Gave Birth to Their Son
Moynahan told E! that Brady was at the hospital for the birth of their son, John, but he was not in the room when she gave birth.
“He was not in the room. He was there on that day and came in afterward. He certainly wasn’t holding my hand while I was pushing.”
Jack was born on Aug. 22, 2008 in Santa Monica and remains a part of Brady and Bundchen’s life. Now nine years old, Moynihan recently shared that her son doesn’t want to follow in his biological father’s footsteps.
“I think right now he wants to be a professional soccer player,” Moynahan recently said on “Live With Kelly”. “Though after the Olympics, he’s like, ‘I think I’m gonna win a gold in swimming.’ Then it was Michael Phelps, so I think he just likes awards.” She also mentioned that he doesn’t really seem to be into acting, either.
4. Bundchen Gave Birth to a Son Named Ben in 2009
Bunchen and Brady’s oldest child, Benjamin Rein, was born on Dec. 9, 2009.
According to CBS Boston, In December of 2013, while Brady called in to make his weekly appearance on Westwood One Radio NFL Thursday Night Football pre-game show with Jim Gray, Brady was asked what his kids wanted for Christmas. Since Benjamin was standing nearby, Brady handed him the phone and let him answer for himself.
CBS said the conversation went as follows:
“Hi Mister Gray,” Ben said.
Gray asked him, “What have you told Santa you want for Christmas?”
“A robot,” Ben replied. “I want a battle car.”
“Anything else?” Gray asked.
“I want all the kids to have Christmas,” he told Gray.
Tom Brady then got back on the phone and talked about how the Bradys have twice dropped off letters to Macy’s Letters to Santa program to benefit the Make-A-Wish program.
5. The Couple’s Daughter, Vivian, Was Born in 2012
Brady’s youngest child, daughter Vivian Lake, was born Dec. 5, 2012.
In 2016 Brady told Entertainment Tonight that while he loves all his children equally, he can’t help but spoil Vivian.
“That little girl owns my day – owns my life,” Brady said. “Whatever she tells her dad to do, that’s what I do. That’s just the way it goes.”
On the afternoon before Super Bowl 51, Bundchen shared an adorable picture of Vivian soaking in the sights in Houston.
